The petition was made by Minzies Creek Village, an unin corporated nonprofit association of residents in the subdivision’s camping areas who are served by an aging sewer system. At their monthly work session Monday night, commissioners expressed concerns on whether or not the 91 customers of the troubled utility service actu ally know how much money they will be required to pay if they form their own sanitary system. County leaders want to make sure those residents know that each customer will have to pay upfront costs estimated at $3,500 with additional monthly costs of $80-$100 if the sewer system project gets under way, according See SEWER, 5 FIRE DESTROYS WINSLOW HOME STAFF PHOTOS BY CATHY WILSON The home of Scott and Sherree Winslow on Up River Road burned late Sunday afternoon despite the efforts of firefighters. No one home when blaze reported By CATHY WILSON Staff Writer A two-story frame home on Up River Road in 1 Perquimans County burned Sunday afternoon despite the efforts of firefighters from four fire departments spanning two counties who battled the blaze in 85-degree heat. No one was at home when the fire was reported around 5:45 p.m. at the * home of Scott and Sherree Winslow. Both levels of the house were destroyed in the fire. Firefighters were seen bringing out pieces of fur niture to prevent further damage from smoke and water. Winslow said he and his son, Zack, were watching a movie in Elizabeth City when he received a phone call from his daughter, Conley, who, with her mother, was in Georgia at a horse show. A friend had notified Conley of the fire via cell phone, he said. His family still resides in Perquimans County Election turnout limited By CATHY WILSON Staff Writer Less than three percent of the registered voters in the county participated in last week’s primary run off election deciding party candidates for five state races in November. According to the Per quimans County Board of Elections, 272 votes were cast in the county July 17 for an election turnout of 2.-8 percent. Perquimans has 9,642 registered voters eligible to vote. Nearly half of the total number of votes cast was cast in the Bethel precinct which includes the resi dential areas of Albemarle Plantation, Holiday Island, and Snug Harbor. Out of 272 votes cast in the county last week, 110 were cast in Bethel. Forty-three persons voted in East Hertford, 42 in New Hope, 30 in Parksville, 24 in Belvidere, 17 in West Hert ford, and just 6 in Nicanor. School supplies needed By CATHY WILSON JStaff Writer It’s almost that time of year again. Perquimans County Schools will open their doors to students on Aug. 27 and several groups are trying to make sure stu dents have the supplies they need. The Perquimans County Mentoring Focus Group (PCMFG) will sponsor a Community Back to School Supply Drive July 25-Aug. 16.
